Aloneness as spiritual practice is retreat from others, an intentional act of obscurity, and not as an act of betrayal of your devotion to others, but as an expression of your devotion to others. Indeed, the one able gladly to embrace his or her aloneness apart from others, which is really the aloneness of everyone but which few have recognized, is the same one more prepared to live in Love among others. Aloneness, apartness, obscurity, anonymity, and such qualities are not equated with living among others in most cultures, but such, according to the sages across the ages, is integral to being most gracefully in community. And, likely, that word being is vital to understand this. Our essential blessing in community is giving ourselves to offer an intangible sense of Presence, of Grace, and not primarily what we say or do. Being is essential to move beyond living together or sharing a common space to being communion together. Then, we come to see, obscurity is a quality that is not merely something we enter when apart from others, but is a quality of quiet, subtle Presence that, we could say, lives within us and expresses through us in our daily lives.

Is it okay to be obscure hidden unseen?
Christ loving inside Jesus unseen
Buddha awake inside Gautama unnoticed
Joy breathing inside laughter
You, everyone, a house for Spirit to look out through its windows
Silent Alone like a stream deep in the woods untouched, virgin flowing clean, free
Possibly we are already obscure
Is this what the sages call emptiness?
Possibly the leaf dances with the twirling wind the Sun sprinkles love beams on dewy grass while birdsong adorns the sky bowing to the still Night calling us from the noise and busyness all around to the quietness of Rest
Possibly for all things are obscure empty even of being empty Here, Being
Possibly we have come from Nowhere and have Nowhere to go
Possibly we have forgotten and Now is the Moment for remembering
I think so so I pray "Give me contentment to be empty, too"
I think this is simply saying "Who I am is no one with nothing"
Could this be a simple, beautiful recognition of what we have lost and can, by Grace, be given?
So for now for me obscurity is the emptiness that makes it possible for me to dance with all Creation, with Life, with You
Obscurity My Prayer to be obscure simply, purely, in Love moment-by-moment to live, to die obscure, free, in Grace with everyone

There are worlds made of music playing between the notes of every song. Be silent, like that.
